Trauma and stress can also trigger hair loss. Burns may also cause the loss of hair. It’s important to understand the reasons that hair loss does not happen. There are many theories that claim that hair loss can occur due to poor circulation, lack of vitamins or by wearing hats. These have been proven false. It’s also not true that men who have not lost their hair by middle age will never lose their hair.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with a sedative to keep the patient calm. In this surgery small pieces of hair-supporting scalp grafts are transferred to a bald area. There are different types of grafts that vary in shape and size. Grafts can have two to about thirty hairs. This surgery is done over a long period of time, and full re-growth may take years to achieve. The grafts are replanted every few months, as needed. Coarse and light hair tends to achieve better results. Generally, the grafts are removed using a scalpel and cut into smaller pieces. Then they are attached to their new site by placing them into tiny holes in the scalp. Saline solution may be injected into the scalp periodically to maintain its strength. Scars that are small and straight will be present at the donor site, however they will be concealed by hair.
Like many other surgeries, the hair transplant surgery comes with risk of infection. Infections can usually be treated with antibiotics.
The replacement of hair lost due to burns or trauma may be covered by insurance.
