Nipple reduction surgery helps achieve a smaller nipple and areola size

The size of nipples can depend on a number of factors, including genetics, childbirth, or undergoing tissue loss.

Both men and women can reap the benefits of nipple reduction surgery. Nipple reduction surgery removes excess areola tissue, thereby decreasing the nipple size. Nipple symmetry can also be achieved by this surgery.



Incisions are made in the areola area. Extra areola tissue is removed. Internal purse string sutures are employed to keep the tissue from stretching apart. These are not visible. Stitches are used to close the incisions, and these are visible.

This surgery can be combined with other surgical procedures. General anesthesia is usually used in this surgery. Light sleep sedation can also be used. The patient is allowed to return home within a few hours after the surgery; however they are usually not allowed to drive on their own.

Most patients experience very light pain following the surgery. To help reduce swelling and bruising, patients are required to wear a surgical bra or gauze bandage for several days after the surgery. Normal activity can be resumed after about a week.



Slight irregularities of the skin may occur near the incisions. These are generally permanent. However, most the time they are not very visible. A lightening of the tissue near the scar area can occur in some patients. This can be helped using tattooing or micropigmentation to reduce the visibility of the lighter tissue. The extra pigment will blend the two colors together and the stitches will become less visible.
