Mole Removal Plastic Surgery

Individuals with bothersome moles may have them removed by surgical means

Moles are darker spots found on the skin. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and may be heightened above the skin level.Image

Some are present at birth, while others may form over time. Some people are bothered by the look of their moles, especially if they are large, heightened or appear in a prominent place on the body. People most often choose to remove moles that interfere with daily activities, such as shaving, or moles that rub against clothing or jewelry.

Mole removal surgery achieves a smoother and clearer skin, and may enhance appearance and improve self-esteem.

Before the removal procedure, the area around the mole is cleansed. Generally, a local anesthetic is used in this surgery, and is applied to the cleansed area. In one type of procedure, the mole is removed by a scalpel.

The surgeon cuts the mole and some surrounding skin. Stitches can either be placed within the skin, or on the surface of the skin. In another type of procedure, the scalpel is used to ‘shave’ he mole.

This is done until the mole is on the same level as the skin surrounding it. Bleeding is stopped by using a special electrical instrument, and an antibiotic is applied to prevent infections. Note that this procedure leaves some mole cells in the skin, and the mole may grow back over time. Both of the described procedures usually take less than hour.

The most common complication with mole removal surgery is infection. This may be treated with antibiotics. Scarring may also occur after the procedure. Most scars fade away over time, but some may be permanent. If the scarring occurs in a visible area, such as the face, its appearance may be reduced by skin surfacing or a similar technique.

The cost depends on the size of the scar and the type of procedure used. The average cost is usually in the range of $125 to $150.

If the mole does not pose a health risk, and is in an inconspicuous place, it may be better to avoid surgery. Also, remember to check moles for health risks with your doctor. If a mole poses a health risk, its removal procedure is different than a cosmetic removal.
